Anthony Brown & Group Therapy Earn Third Grammy Award Nomination

The leader of Anthony Brown & group therAPy, the R.I.A.A. certified gold-selling Maryland-based gospel act with numerous Billboard Magazine No. 1 chart hits and over 300 million digital streams, has overcome many hurdles on his journey to the top of the gospel music field. Despite his past obstacles, Brown is now celebrating the third GRAMMY® Award nomination of his two-decade career. The fresh nod is for his spiritual ode to the global pandemic, “Help,” from his 2020 digital EP, “Stuck in the House: The Pandemic Project” (Key of A / Tyscot / Fairtrade Services). The group’s soul-stirring ballad will challenge tracks by Cece Winans, Maverick City Music, Elevation Worship, and Dante Bowe in the category of Best Gospel Performance/ Song. The GRAMMY® Awards will air on CBS television on Monday, January 31, 2022.

The son of a Baltimore area preacher, Brown grew up loving music and the church. However, he had a stutter. He was self-conscious about it and feared it would keep him from becoming an artist. Instead, he focused on a career behind the scenes as a songwriter. He created the group, Answered Prayers, as an outlet for his songs. Soon, they were backing gospel stars when they traveled through the Maryland area. He composed songs such as Maurette Brown Clark’s No. 1 smash. “It Ain’t Over (‘Til God Says It’s Over),” which caused a buzz about Brown’s skills as a composer.

The encouragement inspired Brown to record an album as Anthony Brown & group therAPy (with the AP capitalized as an acknowledgement of the group’s genesis  as Answered Prayers). The album was peddled to almost every major gospel recording label and turned down by them all. Fellow singer, VaShawn Mitchell, then pitched it to Tyscot Records which took a gamble on the project. The 2012 self-titled album launched with the percussive track, “Testimony,” which peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart and spent an astounding 74 weeks on the survey. Since that time, Brown’s group has emerged as one of the leading acts in gospel music with Billboard Music Award nominations, Top Ten Billboard Gospel chart singles and 4 number ones – including their signature song, “Worth,” that held the No. 1 spot for 24 weeks in 2015.

Brown’s music fuses the percussive sounds of the streets with the ornate majesty of the classical music he studied at Morgan State University. That music doesn’t only revolve around typical gospel themes or stories. He also tackles self-esteem – something he’s personally had to battle – on tracks such as his gold-selling anthem, “Worth.” On his Pandemic project, he wrote about social justice following the killing of George Floyd on “Call to Action,”  positive thinking on “Something Good,”  and self-affirmation on “Enough.” With stuttering behind him, he also hosts a weekly radio program on WHUR 96.3 FM in Washington, D.C. and is now producing other gospel megastars.

Home for Christmas, the latest holiday offering from two-time GRAMMY® Award winner and 22-time Dove Award honoree Jason Crabb, has recieved rave reviews. The three-song EP was produced and arranged by the late Tim Akers (Reba McEntire, CeCe Winans), along with GRAMMY®-winning Rascal Flatts founding member and Red Street CEO Jay DeMarcus.

The project features two original selections as well as Crabb’s new rendition of the Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene-penned Christmas classic, “Mary, Did You Know?” With its horn-studded R&B groove, the nostalgic title-cut, “Being Home For Christmas,” was written by Crabb, Don Koch, Caleb Ward and Jordan Ward and celebrates the importance of family above the trappings of the season. And “Who Could’ve Dreamed?” is an Inspirational pop ballad penned by Koch, Akers and Tony Wood spotlighting the true meaning of Christmas as Crabb proclaims, “Who could have looked into that holy stable and seen the shadow of the cross?”

Home for Christmas previews Crabb’s full-length holiday recording set for release next year. “When I signed to Red Street and Jay asked me what I wanted to do, I told him a Christmas project was one of my dream records,” Crabb shares. “I’ve been doing music for a while now, and you hope and pray for something that helps define your legacy. I think this Christmas project is that record for me. These are the songs I hope my grandkids will grab hold of and be proud of what Grandpa did.”

“I was so honored to work with Tim Akers again, and this was his last project,” Crabb says. “He was a friend and we’d collaborated before, but this time was special. Tim was producing and arranging the strings for the record when his leukemia came back. He even sat in the hospital in his last days and worked on the music. Nashville lost an amazing talent in Tim, and I really want this record to honor his life. We love you, Tim.”

Home for Christmas arrives on the heels of Crabb’s June Red Street Records debut, Just As I Am. Produced by DeMarcus, the five-song EP is highlighted by the title-cut and lead single—a powerful declaration of faith in the One who is constant and sure.

Lecrae & 1K Phew Announce Collaborative Album ‘No Church In A While’

To say that Atlanta is merely having a moment would be to overlook decades of the region’s impact on hip-hop culture at large. From the emergence of Outkast and Goodie Mob in the early 90s to Ludacris and T.I. at the top of 2000, and more recently with Migos, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Future, Atlanta has proven itself to be an inimitable force.

A new breed of artists taking the trap sensibility and elevating it into a new sound called “Street Gospel,” a term coined by Atlanta based Reach Records artist, 1K Phew. 1K Phew’s smooth delivery, swag, and evocative vocals have an infectious quality that is streetwise yet commercially viable.

Reach Records president and co-founder, Lecrae describes Phew’s sound as hip-hop that is equally at home in the club or the church. “Our artists at Reach Records are continuing to prove that faith can exist beyond the pews of the church if expressed authentically. Rappers like 1K Phew are carrying forward the torch we lit with ‘Let The Trap Say Amen’ using their music to reach hip-hop heads with a spiritually that’s not forced or foreign to them.”

1K Phew’s new project collaborative album with Lecrae, No Church In A While, features 10 tracks including: “Wildin” “Ready Or Not,” “Move It,” “One Call,” “What We Gon Do,” “Amen,” “Blockhead,” “Born Sinner” “Save Us,” and “No Church In A. While.” Lecrae was recording his mixtape, Church Clothes 4, when it occurred to him that people actually hadn’t been to church to even put on those church clothes in a while because of the pandemic, church hurt, and other reasons.

The concept for their collaborative album, No Church For A While grew out of their conversations. “No Church In A While has all types of meanings,” expresses 1K Phew. “We just went through the pandemic and ain’t nobody to church in a minute. This album is for everybody who ain’t been to church or connected to God in a while who thinks they can’t go back. It ain’t really that deep. God is waiting for everybody to tap back in. No Church In A While is telling people there’s still hope, you can still turn to God no matter how long you’ve been away.”

The Single “Wildin,” releases November 17th and the album, No Church In While releases December 3rd. To stream now, click here.
