“State of the Union looks at where we intersect with God, with each other, and with ourselves,” explains Amanda Cook. “It’s about relationship and healing the way that I relate to everything. We can’t control or manipulate anything that happens out there, the only things we can control are our thoughts and what’s in our hearts. The fact that we get to bring our thoughts to the Christ-mind is incredible. Sometimes I forget how kind he really is, and that we can sit in His love and compassion.”
Cook co-wrote the songs on the new project with GRAMMY®-winning producers Jason Ingram and Paul Mabury (Lauren Daigle, Cory Ashbury) as well as renowned worship leaders and songwriters Steffany Gretzinger and Pat Barrett. Celebrating her new album, she has hosted listening events in both Los Angeles and Nashville with her close friends, songwriters, and producers to share the heart behind the songs. She also sat down with New York Times bestselling author and podcast host Annie F. Downs to have a conversation about her album. “The title started out as kind of a joke,” she shares with Annie F. Downs. “Throughout the making of the album, I was dealing with a lot of mental clutter and anxiety. I would give these speeches to my producers about where I’m at and what I’m dealing with, and so one day Jason [Ingram] asked, ‘So, Amanda, what’s the state of the union today?’ and I probably gave him a speech about how insecure I was or what I was going through.”
Supporting the release of the album are lyric videos for three of the songs, “Miracle of the Mind,” “While We Wait,” and “Where the War Ends.” In addition, the audio-video for the song “Our Jesus” is available now. The youngest of six siblings, the Nigerian-born singer/songwriter immigrated to the United States with his uncle at the age of six. Born blind in one eye, Blessing’s parents sent him to the United States in an effort to restore his vision, though unfortunately he lost his complete eyesight by age 10.
Gravitating towards the piano before losing his vision, Blessing’s school teachers helped nurture his talent, and he soon found himself at Belmont University honing his craft in Music City. Hints of pop, Motown, and soul flourish across Blessing’s music as he sings of optimism, hope, and finding silver linings in dark clouds. Today (May 20), breakout artist and songwriter Rachael Nemiroff shares new music with “Secrets (In The Light Mix).” The original version of “Secrets” released last month.
The song was co-written by Nemiroff, Beni Cowart (Tim Publishing), and Nick Schwarz (Provident Publishing), who also serves as producer for the project. The song’s message is about being vulnerable and opening up to each other, since all of us have “secrets” that we are hesitant to share with each other. Once that burden is freed, it’s a powerful response to once again being part of a community.
“This new song means so much to me, as it was written from a personal dark time during the last two years,” said Nemiroff. “I hope the music and lyrics will ‘light’ to the fact that we all have things in our lives that we don’t need to carry alone. We’re all different shades of broken, but we’re not hopeless in heavens eyes.”
Mental health is a cause that Nemiroff has always be passionate about, and having lived through her ordeals, she wants this issue to come out in the open. With a strong community that we are lucky to have in our lives, it gives us the opportunity to walk through the tough times together. Life is constantly changing, and Nemiroff hopes that writing “Secrets” will encourage anyone who is needing help to reach out to close friends, family, and to seek professional therapy. You’re never alone in these challenging situations, as long as you reach out for help.
The summer is looking bright for IVAV recording artist Ty Brasel, who will release his new album, TRANSCENDENT, during the months ahead. “He just perfectly fit into the track,” says Brasel of 1K Phew, who previously teamed up with the GRAMMY®-winning Lecrae for 2021’s collaborative mixtape No Church In A While. “Some guests get on a song and do their own thing and run it off the tracks a little. But 1K Phew brought his unique style while staying true to what was being created. He made it greater.”
Like the rest of TRANSCENDENT, “GOD IS THE BEST” was produced by Dirty Rice, Joseph Prielozny, and Juice Bangers. Those three producers also helped create Destiny, Vol. 1, Brasel’s 13-song mixtape from November 2021. Working once again with the same team, Brasel found an opportunity to “take everything up a notch, sonically,” while adding new depth and dimension to his lyrical focus on faith, self-improvement, and resilience.
“I’m always finding new ways to innovate and talk about my story in a new way, but my central message is consistent,” he says. “I want to remind people that better days are always ahead, and it’s OK to not be OK, because God sees that and he cares. That’s why God is the best.”
