[Album] No Church in a While – 1k Phew & Lecrae

Today, Friday, December 3rd, Lecrae and 1K Phew offers their new collaborative album, No Church In A While, which features 10 tracks including “Wildin” “Ready Or Not,” “Move It,” “One Call,” “What We Gon Do,” “Amen,” “Blockhead,” “Born Sinner” “Save Us,” and “No Church In A While.”

Reach Records has several rollout plans to celebrate the release including a YouTube premiere of “One Call,” (the second single and video released from NCIAW) at 3pm on December 3rd. The label has partnered with YouTube for a YouTube Premiere exclusive and official afterparty tomorrow. Click here to attend. There’s also a Sunday Brunch planned with Atlanta influencers and local media at a private, invite-only location!

The concept for their collaborative album, No Church For A While grew out of conversations between Lecrae and 1K Phew. Lecrae was recording his mixtape, Church Clothes 4, when it occurred to him that people actually hadn’t been to church to even put on those church clothes because of the pandemic, church hurt, and other reasons. Out of his convos with 1K Phew who he is mentoring came the idea to actually record an album for people who like themselves hadn’t been to church in a while.

“No Church In A While has all types of meanings,” explains 1K Phew. “We just went through the pandemic and ain’t nobody to church in a minute. This album is for everybody who ain’t been to church or connected to God in a while who thinks they can’t go back. It ain’t really that deep. God is waiting for everybody to tap back in. No Church In A While is telling people there’s still hope, you can still turn to God no matter how long you’ve been away.”

Atlanta native, 1K Phew is the only artist signed to the Reach Records roster who is born and raised in the city that the label now calls home. He is leading the way for a new breed of artists taking the trap sensibility and elevating it into a new sound called “Street Gospel,” a term he coined. 1K Phew’s smooth delivery, swag, and evocative vocals have an infectious quality that is streetwise yet commercially viable. Reach Records president and co-founder, Lecrae describes Phew’s sound as hip-hop that is equally at home in the club or the church. “Our artists at Reach Records are continuing to prove that faith can exist beyond the pews of the church if expressed authentically. Rappers like 1K Phew are carrying forward the torch we lit with ‘Let The Trap Say Amen’ using their music to reach hip-hop heads with a spiritually that’s not forced or foreign to them.”

To say that Atlanta is merely having a moment would be to overlook decades of the region’s impact on hip-hop culture at large. From the emergence of Outkast and Goodie Mob in the early 90s to Ludacris and T.I. at the top of 2000, and more recently with Migos, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Future, Atlanta has proven itself to be an inimitable force. Join Reach Records as they celebrate the City Of Atlanta and bring the scriptures to the streets!

[Album] Live From Chicago – Vincent Bohanan

After much anticipation, Vincent Bohanan & SOV’s rousing set LIVE FROM CHICAGOis available today on HezHouse Entertainment/RCA Inspiration.

The full-length album bows one week after the online premiere of the upbeat video for Bohanan’s current single, “Oh Give Thanks.” The video, which celebrates the vibrant Brooklyn community that Bohanan was raised in, can be seen on YouTube.

Bohanan, who also serves as Pastor of The Winner’s Assembly – a thriving church in Brooklyn, New York, comprised entirely of members under the age of 30 years old – has mastered the generational divide by reaching back to the days of traditional gospel choir music and bringing them fully into the new millennium. Live From Chicago puts this gift on full display. The albumopens by ushering in the spirit with a stirring rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer.” Known for their full-throated youthful energy, SOV’s delivery on hits such as the first release from the album, “Any Day Now,” leaves you no choice but to move. The current single “Oh Give Thanks” is not only befitting the holiday season, it is a praise chant that showcases the choir’s expansive vocal range with infectious energy and modulations that soar to the heavens. “I Believe God” is an up-tempo praise break-inspiring decree of faith that would be just as at home in the 1980s as it is in 2021, and gives a nod to Ron Kenoly’s popular “Whose Report Shall You Believe?”

“I Owe You” is an Afro-Caribbean-inspired that Bohanan refers to as a “Disney-esque song” that pushed SOV outside of the traditional choir music box and expand their versatility.  “Take Control” offers an apt benediction to the album by imploring the listener to reaffirm their trust in the Lord’s ability to move, even in seemingly impossible situations.

“Gospel music has a universal message, but it can be represented in a kaleidoscope of sounds. I was raised on and love hymns and an old school, traditional sound, but as I learned more about music in general and discovered different forms of expression, I decided to incorporate some variety into this album. We had a great time recording this project, and I hope that everyone has a great time listening to it,” says Vincent Bohanan.

Born in Long Island, but raised in Brooklyn, Pastor Bohanan might be a millennial, but he is an old soul when it comes to gospel music. He is an immensely passionate, self-described “choir head” whose first exposure to a church choir was at Brooklyn’s Institutional Church of God in Christ. After stepping in as the church’s organist at the age of 15, Bohanan organized the Sound of Victory Fellowship Choir in 2014, a year after releasing his first single, “Heaven,” with Institutional Church of God in Christ’s C.E.W. Youth Choir and in response to the lack of community choirs in the area. It was such a success, nearly 100 members from as far away as New Jersey and Connecticut showed up by the third rehearsal.

Vincent Bohanan is a living testimony of God’s grace. His pastoral and music ministries carry on the legacy of his mother, the late Marie Bohanan, a  former New York City Police Officer who developed cancer and passed away after being part of the 9/11 World Trade Center search and recovery  team. Vincent Bohanan discovered his love for music and ministry through his mother, and proudly continues in her footsteps. In fact, he started pastoring after his mom passed away – stepping into her leadership role.

Bishop Hezekiah Walker, a longtime friend of the Bohanan family, and a fellow Brooklynite, has been supportive of Vincent since the early years of SOV. He invited the young choir to sing at his Love Fellowship Tabernacle Easter services, where Vincent was serving as one of Love Fellowship’s organists. Walker even brought the group along to back CeCe Winans on “Dancing in the Spirit,” a track for her 2017 release Let Them Fall in Love. From there, SOV made week-long appearances with P. Diddy at New York’s Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden.

[Album] The Light – Jeff Prince

Gospel Music Minister Jeff Prince has finally released his debut album titled THE LIGHT.

THE LIGHT album symbolizes hope. The Light Album reels out in music some of my experiences and experiences of others whilst stoutly preaching God’s love. Given the times we are in, hopelessness seems to reek in every corner, suicide rates are up and depression has become the regular news. This means that a lot of people need to be constantly reached using several communication blocks, I have chosen music as my arrowhead.

Just as when light is introduced in a dark place, things come alive, that is what we are believing God for with this album. Light will come into every life that listens to the album.

The album, though ‘gospel’ comprises love, inspiration, and of course gospel lyric songs. It is a blend of rock, contemporary afrobeat fusion, contemporary Highlife, R&B, and some traditional vibes.

[EP] No Christmas Without You (16 Versions) – John P. Kee

Gospel music legend, John P. Kee, will drop a one-song, 16-track holiday album entitled, “No Christmas Without You” (Kee Music Group / Tycsot), on all digital music platforms on December 10th. This one-of-a-kind rarity is comprised of sixteen unique versions of the feel-good yulettide track that was written and produced by Kee, a gold-selling artist known for gospel standards such as “Show Up!,” “Standing in the Need,” and “Jesus is Real,” among many others.

Smart URL: https://smarturl.it/dn4moc

Each of the renditions of the song is distinct in some manner. The first version is a We-Are-the-World kind of affair featuring  The Family which is comprised of most of the artists who also perform individually on the album. The next version is John P. Kee himself, turning in a warm, contemporary R&B-flavored track about enjoying the holiday with loved ones. There are other solo versions by gospel heavyweights such as Kim Burrell, Gene Moore, and Jason Nelson.

R&B star, Susan Carol, delivers a thrilling, acoustic rendition while soul man, Frank McComb, plays the piano on his version that takes on a Smooth Jazz essence. R&B singer, Lachardon, emphasizes the bass guitar on her sultry late night ballad rendering. Corvius Scott offers up a Stylistics-worthy falsetto on his turn while George Leggett’s tenor is a commanding force on his cut.  Mekahla D. Smith’s bright soprano shines over a programmed track that fuses elements of country music in an urban setting.

Reality TV singing contestants Majeste Pearson (FOX TV’s The Four), Shameia Crawford (ABC TV’s Rising Star), and Saeed “SrSoul” Renaud (FOX YV’s The Four) sing their own versions. There are mash-ups too. The sweet-voiced, Glynis LaFlore, teams with Darius “DJ” James who demonstrates a silky tenor on his effort. Actor Chaz Shepard, who played Trey Wiggs on BET’s The Game TV series, joins Sonya McGuire for a smooth, soulful take.
