[Music] Mud – Philip Anthony
Independent hip-hop artist Philip Anthony closes out his three-single series with Mud, a reflective record examining the years of work, experiences, and persistence that shaped his journey in music.
Following “Iconic,” released August 4, and “Reminisce,” released September 11, Mud serves as the final chapter of a three-song run built around identity, reflection, and the experiences behind Philip Anthony’s evolution as an artist.

While “Iconic” looked toward becoming and “Reminisce” turned toward relationships and memories from the past, Mud goes back to the foundation — the years before the current chapter, when the work was happening without much attention surrounding it.
That idea is reflected directly in the single’s artwork. Featuring an archival classroom photograph of a younger Philip, the cover offers its own definition of mud:
“The years nobody saw. The work that built you. The ground you rose from.”
For Philip Anthony, Mud isn’t simply a record about struggle. It is an acknowledgment of the process — the early music, lessons, setbacks, relationships, and years of development that helped form the artist listeners encounter today.
“When people discover you now, they’re meeting the current version of you,” says Philip. “They don’t necessarily see all the years that came before it. Mud is about honoring that part of the journey. Those years mattered. They built me.”
Together, the three releases provide different perspectives on the same journey. “Iconic” considers the person you are becoming. “Reminisce” looks back at the people and moments that remain with you. Mud reaches even further into the foundation — the work and experiences that made growth possible in the first place.
The series also reflects the larger ethos behind Philip Anthony’s music: building with intention, allowing the work to develop over time, and recognizing that some of the most important parts of a journey happen long before anyone else sees the results.
With Mud, Philip Anthony closes the three-single chapter not by focusing on where he has arrived, but by acknowledging the ground he rose from.
