[Music] Home – Jeremy Riddle
Jeremy Riddle releases “Home.” The live track can be heard below.
Within every human heart is a longing for home. A longing for a place of safety, a place of belonging, a place of love. Looking back, I can see all the ways this longing for home has impacted so many decisions and choices I’ve made. I’ve built houses. I’ve built communities. I’ve invested so much time and energy attempting to build and create a sense of “home”.
The only issue with all of my attempts at “home” building is that following Jesus has been very disruptive to them. 🙂 The houses I’ve built (thinking they would be our “forever” home) have all come and gone and with their leaving, the realization they never satisfied that longing in me anyway.
Then there were the multiple transitions the Lord has lead us on which have required an uprooting of all that we knew as “home” in previous seasons. Many of you can relate. After several of these, our dreams and desires for “home” can start to feel like an elusive thing that always lives just outside of our reach. Yet oddly enough, the desire remains and so our pursuit continues.
If you’re like me and have ever wondered why, I believe the cry for “home” in us is the cry for eternity. The cry for something we once had. Something we intuitively know we were made for. But something we lost. And so we wander, and ever look for, a way to return home.
The glorious news for anyone who puts their faith is Jesus is this: you CAN. You can come home. And not to a home that will inevitably be subject to brokenness, instability, age and decay. A home of everlasting permanence and glory—a real place where joy, celebration, connection, and love will be eternal. Where all pain, tears, suffering and fear will be wiped away forever and forgotten. Where fellowship with each other and with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit will be unbroken and unending. A city whose architect and builder is God Himself.
Here on earth we will never find the home the deep in our hearts cries for. Here we are sojourners and aliens. But that is not our future. Jesus is not only preparing a place for us, but His love is leading us, HOME. -Jeremy Riddle
