To close out 2021, JJ Heller released new music with “Growing Older.” Heller shares on social media,

A few days before my 40th birthday, I wrote down some thoughts (below). The thoughts turned into lyrics and now, over a year later, Growing Older is out in the world. As we all prepare to turn the page on another year, I thought I’d share these words again.

When I was young I used to wonder why older ladies would work so hard to be younger. I’d see them dye their hair and fight off their wrinkles with an army of creams and needles, and I’d think, just be who you are. For so long I couldn’t understand it. But somewhere along the way I turned into one of them.

Who told us younger is better and why are we listening?

I am who I am because of all the years that brought me here; every moment carries me forward like steps to a scenic lookout. The older I get, the more beautiful the view.

I’ve learned to keep my eyes open for little bits of wisdom I find on the path and my pockets are just beginning to fill. So if I look tired, it’s because I’ve come a long way. This is the face of a woman who’s been on a journey, each wrinkle a monument to the grief and joy I’ve felt; each silver strand of hair a glittering reminder of all the magic I’ve seen.

Yes, it’s harder and harder to sit on the floor (and get back up again). Yes, the newness is wearing off, but these spots and wrinkles are not flaws; they’re patina. We’re not just growing older, we’re growing more beautiful with age.

Heller began releasing monthly singles in April 2017 that together have amassed over 55 million combined streams to date (through August 2020). The songstress will continue to announce a brand-new song on the first Friday of each month.
