[Music] Father To Son – Brian Doerksen
I started writing this song the month our first son was born in the early 90’s when I was 26. What I didn’t know as I began to sing these words was that Benjamin had Fragile X Syndrome and would require full time support for life. This song then became the opening song for the musical Father’s House. In the original script, a young man goes to the mall on a Saturday afternoon and gets handed a card by a curious old woman with his name on it.
When he opens the card, this song begins to play. This 30th anniversary version of the song remains true to the spirit of the original in its arrangement and features the same guitarist Brian Thiessen playing nylon guitar. It also features 2 cello parts weaving in and out representing the relationship between a father and son. These days my vocal range is a bit lower (so this version is 3 semitones lower), but it’s still all about the heart of a father singing over his son.
Our sons and daughters are our greatest treasures; and all of us are treasured by our Father in heaven. I hope this reimagined version of this song helps you receive that truth, no matter who your earthly father is. You are loved. -Doerksen
