Gospel Music’s smoothest ambassador and pastor of Maryland’s The Tab church, Jason Nelson, has landed the No. 1 gospel song in the nation – for the fourth time. The track, “Residue,” is No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart for the week ending November 6tth with 1,116 airplay detections.
The song has also reached No. 1 on Mediabase’s Gospel Songs chart. “I’m so grateful to have reached #1 again,” Nelson says. “`Residue’ really speaks to what the world needs: a fresh start. I’m so thankful for my team at Tyscot Records and FairTrade Services. Congrats goes to them as well. Jerome and Danni Baylor are amazing songwriting partners, and I wouldn’t be in this place without them, so to God be the glory!”
“Residue” (Jaelyn Song Music /Tyscot / FairTrade) is an up-tempo departure from Nelson’s past No. 1 ballad hits such as “Forever” and “Great I Am” that have earned him over 100 million digital streams over the last decade. Although, the message is spiritual; the production is Adult Contemporary R&B thanks to the Baylors who have collaborated with the likes of urban hitmakers such as Fantasia. The warm track shows off Nelson’s polished bass playing and his soulfully measured tenor that is on par with that of Charlie Wilson or Luther Vandross.
“Residue was inspired by the idea that being in proximity to God has a cleansing effect on a person,” Nelson explains. “The song gives insight to how God cleans us up when we come to Him. He never has the expectation that we are perfect to engage with Him. He takes us as we are and washes away the residue of the past as we walk with him.”
“Residue” is the first radio single from Nelson’s first album in three years and first studio project ever – “Close” (Jaelyn Song / Tyscot / FairTrade) – which was digitally released this past August. The physical CD configuration will hit brick and mortar stores and online shippers on November 5th. The uplifting twelve song set features guest appearances from R&B star Chrisette Michele, bassist John Patitucci, and worship leader, Osby Berry.

Where could I run that You couldn’t be found

Acclaimed bluegrass ensemble and Song Garden recording artist Chosen Road will release Appalachian Hymns November 12. Produced by the group’s Zachary Alvis and Tyler Robertson, the 12-song collection pairs the band’s unparalleled acoustic instrumentation and vocal harmonies with classic songs of faith and the Church.
The project’s cornerstone lead single and video, “Be Thou My Vision,” is one of the oldest hymns of the Church, bearing a message as timely today as when the words were first written centuries ago in Ireland. Chosen Road honors their Scotch-Irish heritage with the arrangement, featuring beautiful Celtic instrumentation and intricate harmonies. The track will be available October 29, in advance of the album release.
Other highlights of Appalachian Hymns include the rousing “Brethren We Have Met To Worship” (available November 5); the striking simplicity of “I Stand Amazed”; the gentle, guitar-driven “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”; the a cappella “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be”; and the crowd-pleasing instrumental “Send The Light.”
“For our first hymns record, we wanted to take traditional songs of the Church and pair them with our Appalachian acoustic instruments, while approaching the arrangements and musical settings in our own unique way,” said Chosen Road’s Jonathan Buckner. “When we were deciding what hymns to record, we were overwhelmed with the richness of Truth we found in these lyrics. We began to gravitate towards some of the older hymns and songs we have loved to hear audiences sing for years now. Many of these songs have likely been played on the same kinds of instruments we use, since our ancestors first settled in the Appalachian Mountains. That made both the song selection process, and actual recording, very meaningful and almost sacred for us.”
“Every song on the album points the listener to the Light of Christ and the Hope that is found in Him,” Buckner continues. “It is amazing what singing some of these old hymns can do for the soul when we are facing the unknown. As people listen and sing along to the music, we hope they are encouraged and reminded that God is in complete control. I know we were as we created this project, even though it was during one of the most uncertain times in our lives.”
